schoolsmadefresh is an attempt to sustain a conversation about what it takes to foster meaningful, rigorous learning for students in our public schools. It acknowledges a personal belief that reflection and adaptation are key components of learning and essential ingredients for our own and our students’ intellectual and emotional health.
I am from a family of teachers. I drove a school bus to earn money while going to college. I am deeply interested in the connection between teachers’ emotional and professional lives and the quality and rigor of student learning in classrooms.
I am a National Board Certified Spanish teacher and led an urban high school in San Francisco as principal to California Gold Ribbon status. I believe that schools can and should play a powerful role in providing access and opportunity for our most marginalized students.
I am currently the Executive Director of School Renewal in Santa Ana Unified School District, the 6th largest district in California, where 60% of students are English Learners and 91% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.
